One Format Scuffle Ends

Back at the start of January, I took notice of the news that Warner Brothers had decided to concentrate on high-definition releases on Blu-ray, and of the speculation that this might put Blu-ray well ahead of the other high-definition format, HD DVD. I then spun that speculation into wondering if this would mean the Star Wars movies would get a high-definition release, but I suppose that afterwards I then wondered if I had pushed things too far...
Today, though, after several news items in just the past few days about big vendors like Wal-Mart deciding to focus on Blu-ray as well, I saw reports that production of HD DVD players by Toshiba, that format's leader, will come to an end. It was somehow a lot faster than I'd ever really imagined, and yet I did take notice of a point that Toshiba doesn't need HD DVD sales to survive. Now, I suppose, I can keep wondering about how long it'll be until various high-definition releases follow, given that it'll still take a good deal of money to assemble a home theatre system capable of showing them off...
