krpalmer: (anime)

A peculiar bit of anime news popped up just a few days ago: the North American releasing company ADV Films removed references to a slew of its most recent releases, and its upcoming releases, from its own web site. After the shocking and sudden demise of the North American releasing company Geneon, it seems that anime fans are more than ready to correct for their error by forecasting doom every chance they get, and ADV had made some cost-cutting efforts in recent weeks that had attracted a lot of attention, so let the speculation begin! Hundreds of posts piled up on the message boards that I do follow, people competing to envision the worst possible outcome (some of them gloating in a somehow obnoxious manner that their pessimism had been proven right) and contemplate a future devoid of one more North American anime company.

I tried to keep my own speculations under control even as I slogged through page after page of posts, but hard facts do seem to be emerging only mere days after the whole thing started. It's more complicated than just a web site problem, but there are at least efforts being made at resolving what seems to be a licensing issue. Of course, all that might mean is that the actual base to build all the wild speculation on is just a little more solid than before... as for other anime news, I note that Bandai Visual is continuing its strategy of squeezing every cent it can from whatever irreducible core of fans exist that will pay for anime DVDs no matter what... of course, that's not particularly heartening to me. Still, I also had my attention drawn to the featured article on the front page of Wikipedia being for "Manos: The Hands of Fate." That's amusing in its own way.
