Dreaming Off Into That Azure Sky...

krpalmerI've been starting to think that it's just about time to make another post to my journal, but haven't been quite sure what to post about. Then, checking the front page of the Anime on DVD site this afternoon, I noticed a news item that Warner Brothers will be phasing out its dual releases of high-definition video in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats to concentrate on Blu-ray, which apparently puts some "critical mass of titles" on that format's side... (Although, mind you, the news last year of Paramount going HD-DVD exclusive seems to suggest to me that this thing could spin itself further out yet.)
I suppose this is another one of those items that I really shouldn't need to care about. I don't own either kind of high-definition player, I don't have a high-definition TV, and I don't even have a surround-sound system hooked up to my DVD player... but my thoughts did wander in a very particular direction, and I started wondering if this will help inspire a high-definition release of the Star Wars saga in the forseeable future, perhaps in a box set with loads of interesting extras that might give me some motivation to actually decide on brands and models instead of just feeling "oppressed by choice." Somehow, it's nice for me to imagine Star Wars being proclaimed to be part of the "breakout at last" of high-definition for sale, instead of "finally showing up at the party..." (One odd thought has occurred to me, though, and that's that where new DVD editions are churned out of just about everything, including the Matrix movies and the Lord of the Rings movies and even the "Original Trilogy," TPM and AotC haven't needed that yet.) Of course, I can also imagine people complaining that "this time, we demand the 'Vintage Editions' being released alone, and remastered from film prints this time!" Perhaps, then, I should remember that I don't need all of that fancy and expensive new electronics.
