At the start of this year I pushed up the pace of posting to this journal, hoping to say something every day about the year-representing episodes of anime I was was watching. After that I relaxed back to “hopefully within every seven days.” While I took a break during my first lengthy trip in years, that vacation wasn’t long enough to reduce this summary to eleven sentences. All in all, though, the sentences might continue to teeter on the edge between “elaborate” and “run-on.”

January: Having seen bits of animation from Japan antique enough to perhaps avoid a certain amount of the indignation churned up over the fans who conflate “old anime” and “whatever’s not hot at that very moment” has been something to post about here, but still not something to boast about.

February: With the Vinland Saga anime adaptation picking up again right when I’d decided to put myself sixty-odd “old” anime episodes away from watching anything not on that timeline, it seemed the right moment to get to the thirteenth double-length volume of Makoto Yukimura’s original manga.

March: Sixty days later, the seventy-third half-hour (give or take) instalment from a sixty-fourth anime series (TV and OVA), with a “short TV episode” and a theatrical short added in too, brought me to the end of my offbeat odyssey.

April: All the “quarter” I have left to review here amounts to thirty days.

May: Specific plans for just how to “see a movie at the movies again” had shaped themselves in my mind for some time.

June: Once I’d bought a copy of Uta Iska’s manga Is Love the Answer?, I took some time getting around to reading it.

July: With the whistle-stop sampling of sixty years of anime I’d been daydreaming about and mapping out for quite some time wrapped up at last in the first sixty days of this year, with this “quarter” I was back to normal.

August: Last year I did get away on a vacation that involved more than driving back home for the first time in some time, but a hurricane hitting the Maratimes just as the bus tour was headed that way resulted in me getting back to my place after just long enough to appreciate getting back.

September: Cruising to Iceland and back by “the Viking route” did have me thinking back to having watched the latest block of Vinland Saga anime.

October: With an almost month-long vacation booked right in the middle of a more familiar “anime season,” I did some thinking in advance about how two of the things I was getting away from were Blu-Ray players and broadband connections.

November: Next to the original TRS-80 Micro Computer System with its black and white monitor (converted from surplus RCA TVs, as the folklore has it), the Radio Shack Color Computer’s name was justified.

December: On the drive in to work yesterday, the radio program I listen to had pieces on ChatGPT on either side of the half-past local news.

See you in the new year!
