Upgrading my computer’s operating system can take a considerable accumulation of resolve for me. As macOS 12 “Monterey” showed up, though, the “never upgrade under any circumstances whatsoever” fulminations didn’t seem quite as severe, and I only waited for its first major revision before really buckling down to the process. It did take a while to download the installer, and yet perhaps not quite as long as I’d though it might. The actual process of surrending my computer to that installer didn’t seem all that stretched out either.

Once things had booted up again my first thoughts were to try out my regular video player and a collection of emulators, and they all seemed to run all right. Then, I happened to think of the image viewer I’d built my own copy of not that long ago, but when I started up Xee I realised it was showing images much smaller than it had done before. Supposing “run in low resolution” had switched off, I opened the “Get Info” box only to find the option to select that had vanished.

Options like that do keep being taken out of the Macintosh operating system in a sort of “if those old programs aren’t being updated, you should probably search for new ones” way. Before I could quite bring myself to search for a replacement, though, I did do a different bit of searching and managed to get past the fulminations to find a suggestion to open the contextual menu, select “Show Package Contents,” and find the “info.plist” file. Adding a line declaring “NSHighResolutionCapable” “false” right before the last two closing tags did knock the application into permanent low resolution, and things could carry on as they had before for at least a little while longer. I did, though, at least manage to discover how to set a “random image” key in the XnViewMP image browser as well.
