I’d seen the advance reports details were being hammered out as to just how much money would change hands, but the announcement Sony would indeed purchase Crunchyroll to be brought into common ownership alongside Funimation (and Aniplex of America) in the anime industry “outside Japan” still gave me pause. It might have had something to do with the suggestion the “Funimation Global Group” would own Crunchyroll where once the two companies had “partnered,” back before amazon.com and Netflix seemed as if they were going to buy up oversized slices of streaming rights to new-and-notable anime series and those two larger companies already in the industry started looking for corporate overlords of their own. Beyond that, of course, there’s the whole idea of “change is threatening,” especially when it involves big companies. With just a little time spent getting these thoughts together, though, I don’t seem quite as ready to let grudges new or old run away on me as others might; streaming video through an Apple TV does seem to go a bit easier for me than some people find it through whatever means they use. One thing I am thinking about, though, is the streaming service RetroCrush and its selection of “older” anime, even if a good number of the series they offer I already own on disc (many of which through Discotek).
