krpalmer: (kill la d'oh)

I have a pretty good handle now on how to not just order online but also receive manga from an area comics shop. The shipping notice arrives in my email not that long before the parcel does, but it doesn’t take too long before leaving for work to print out the “please leave the box on my doorstep” form and tape it to my front door.

For the latest form, though, all of a sudden the inkjet printer-scanner-copier I’ve used for some years was reporting problems with some of its drivers rather than printing. I made a quick search by its model number and was pointed to the Hewlett-Packard site to download a hefty file, and after all of that when I opened the package I was told the security certificate had expired. Shrugging that off I reinstalled and rebooted, but still couldn’t get the printer to print. By now, I’d run out of time to write a note by hand and hope the delivery driver would accept it without the barcode of the online form. At work I recalled one time a delivery company form had been stuck to my door and, despite the form seeming to suggest a “residential” delivery would have to be looked up online and sought out at a time when I’m very much limiting where I go other than work, there’d been another delivery attempt that had accepted the signed form. After that time, one package had just been left without a form.

Beyond all of that, though, I was uncertain about what might be happening to my computer. “Reinstalling everything” did seem a possible necessity, but we’re still short of “Big Sur” arriving, much less first bug-fix updates to it and the question of whether you’ll be allowed to respect yourself for installing it. I went so far as to wonder whether this would wind up an excuse for getting “one of the last Intel-powered Macintoshes” rather than “one of the first ‘Apple Silicon’ models,” and, remembering my iMac’s screen is turning a bit pink around the edges after five years of use, pondered taking a chance on a “Mac mini.” However, I’m not quite sure how easy it is to find an external monitor with the size and sharpness of my iMac’s “Retina Display.”

Before the end of the day, though, I had turned up some news items about a great many Hewlett-Packard printers not working due to something going awry with their security certificates. Now, I could just wonder about getting a new printer from another company, and considered the extravagance of a colour laser printer over one more inkjet. More than that, though, another delivery company form had been stuck to my door. On looking up the tracking number, I saw I was supposed to head to a convenience store in the neighbourhood, which was at least better than driving to another city.

This morning, I managed to pick up the box of manga at the independent convenience store among apartment tower blocks. Then, I did manage to find a comment about a particular Hewlett-Packard printer software package that was supposed to revive them, downloaded it from an FTP site, and got it installed to find I could get output from my inkjet again. A “two-day wonder” isn’t that bad, even if I’m still daydreaming about more extravagant printers and what hard copy I might produce from them that I’m not printing now.
