Bloom Into You remains a manga I’m interested in following, but when I bought the sixth volume I did have something of an “I’ll get to it in due time” feeling. So far as “girls’ love” manga goes I was finishing Sweet Blue Flowers, and after that I read Kase-san and Cherry Blossoms, fifth in the “Kase-san and...” series and, so I seemed to sense, its possible conclusion. Its two main characters did graduate from high school and move off to university, and there was a consummation scene, although there was also a last page promising the story would continue in university.

For Bloom Into You, though, part of what’s kept me interested does seem how slow it’s moved towards anything similar; indeed, I suppose I’ve come to wonder if one of its main characters Yuu “blooming” at last even if just to talk about it would make things feel conventional and familiar, and maybe that tension held me back from the latest volume just a little even as it stayed different from “admitting the feelings so few in manga still seem to feel safe to share in public.” When I did start reading, there was at least a continued distraction from that in the school play that’s been crafted for the other main character Touko. There were a series of theatrical performances in the course of Sweet Blue Flowers, but perhaps I thought first of the old series KareKano/His and Her Circumstances, the anime of which had been working towards a school play in its later episodes (even as the conventional wisdom noted Hideaki Anno had abandoned the director’s chair and the series was seizing up to a halt) but never got there. I did buy its manga for long enough to see that performance in inwardly voiced black-and-white, but having also picked up on the conventional wisdom the manga went off the rails into sheer melodrama I didn’t go much farther.

Things were less extreme in Bloom Into You, but after wondering just a bit about “the third woman” of the last few volumes Saeki, Yuu took that very large step forward... and then I saw it explained that part of what attracted Touko to Yuu was “‘Love’ wasn’t in your vocabulary,” and I got to wondering if, indeed, I’d really understood the story after all. Still, I can suppose the seventh volume should also get my attention when it does show up.
