My interest in Star Trek always seems to have been a dilettante's. I've seen the fourth through the eighth films at the movies and bits of all five series, but my greatest familiarity with the stories is only with "The Original Series" and The Next Generation, and that more or less through reading plot summaries. It may be, then, that the looking down on a "wheezing franchise" that seemed to start floating around here and there online in the latter part of the 1990s had a certain effect on me for once... but when the very first trailer for a "new beginning!" Star Trek movie came out, I was interested enough in it to go see Cloverfield, and the trailer seemed one of the best parts of the experience in retrospect.

I suppose it all started with my interest in history including an interest in the old days of ocean liners. When my parents said that their latest cruise this year would cross the Atlantic before touring northern Europe, my reaction wasn't "Have a good trip," but rather "That would be interesting to go on"... and before I knew it, they had said that I could come along as the third person in the cabin. I haven't taken many long vacations since starting my current job, tending instead to use up my vacation days near the end of the year with lots of long weekends (and enjoying that)... leaving tomorrow for four weeks of travel and "shore excursions" will certainly be a change for me. Too, though, I'm wondering about cutting my online connection. While I did buy a used portable computer a few months ago (the legendary-to-some "12-inch [30 cm] PowerBook G4"), I'm wondering if I'll be able to, or have time to, find wireless access points ashore, whether what I can afford in terms of onboard access time will amount to any time at all... but if I do have the chance, posting reports will certainly be something I'll think about. (Whether this will really matter in the end...)
