The Worst of Times, the Best of Times
Jul. 3rd, 2008 08:15 pmJust days after mentioning how sickly the North American anime company ADV seemed to be getting in everyone's opinion, the news has cropped up that its latest DVD releases are "suspended indefinitely." Those suspended releases included the very last disc of one series, and I can see that getting people worked up... (I suppose there's some ambiguity to Bandai Entertainment now listing most of the titles previously sold by Bandai Visual USA but not cutting their prices, but it's still early days with that arrangement yet.)
However, shortly after hearing that, there came the news that many of the titles the anime company Geneon had been releasing or planning to release when the plug got pulled on it last year are going to be distributed by another North American anime company, Funimation. Starting late from humble beginnings, Funimation only seems to be going from strength to strength of late. (For some reason, I'm specifically reminded of how they eventually became the company to distribute Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles...) It's true that I rushed out and bought (at non-sale prices) some of the DVDs being released by Geneon on this new list when I heard the bad news, and they've been sitting in my "backlog" ever since, but there's some titles I haven't seen in the list too, and of course it's good news for many people other than me.
