Return of the Visual Guides
Nov. 21st, 2007 08:30 pmA few months ago, I wrote a post wondering what had happened to stop the series of "Visual Guides" beginning to go up on the official Star Wars site, admitting that I could be ambiguous about their slide shows and all their "don't worry, you don't have to use your imagination any more" explanatory annotations. It led to thoughts along the lines of "Some people must find the main characters too imperfect to really like them; therefore, they focus on the fine details; however, it doesn't seem to me that they find even that all that rewarding, and so I've gone straight back to identifying with the main characters..." After that, though, I guess I eventually just forgot about the whole thing... and then, I ran across unexpected news that a new chapter had gone up at long last. This time, I started looking at the slide show intent on letting the "in-story" annotations touch me lightly if at all and focusing on the "production" annotations. It seems that the "droids for sale" scene, filmed early in production, was particularly glitchy, but the thing that worried me the most was pointing out that extra vaporators were added to one establishing shot in the Special Edition, but in the next cut of that shot, the extra vaporators were gone... I suppose I'm always worried about the Special Editions being an easy target. Then, I happened to think "The tradition continues," specifically for that scene in particular, and for some reason that made me feel better.
