krpalmerAs part of my usual daily round past various message boards, I headed to the "official Robotech site," and yet with my usual ambiguous feeling about whether I'm about to stop going there one of these days soon. This year, the unthinkable happened and there was actually some new Robotech animation released... and yet I find myself not really needing to read discussion related to it. Still, I get a "membership point" every day I log into the site, and I've got used to accumulating them... and then, today, I saw a news item proclaiming that the series will be reappearing on TV on a cable channel I can even watch on my side of the border, the "Space" channel.
I admit I can wonder just why seeing this news interested me so much. I managed to buy all the DVDs of the series years ago... and with all of the other anime I have piled up still to watch, it's very easy to think that I've "internalised" Robotech's composite story to where I don't need to watch it, and to also think that I might even prefer to watch the three original anime series combined to create it (subtitled or not)... and yet, in a way it's pleasant to think that I could watch it on broadcast TV if I wanted to, and to know that others can experience it for themselves. I don't know if this will lead to Space showing any more anime; it's easy enough to think that Robotech is being sold for its nostalgia value (and, maybe, the slightest breath of a live-action movie). However, I've heard other anime fans discussing that "mecha" series seem to do all right for themselves in Canada. When a different channel targeted to the "youth" audience rather than the "science fiction" audience, YTV, got around to setting up a small anime block, it featured the more recent mecha series Gundam Seed. That series didn't do very well on Cartoon Network down in the United States, although I've heard that there it was fairly heavily edited and "retouched" for content. In Canada, though, it was rerun several times, leading into another mecha series Eureka Seven being shown when the block was finally revitalised, and then we got the sequel series Gundam Seed Destiny, which wasn't shown in the United States at all (although I suppose I was scared away from watching any of it by people either lamenting or complaining how it more apparently ground to a halt than came to a conclusion...)
