I can admit I've had that specific reaction to other stories, and in thinking about it I can understand getting that reaction from this one. It may be that I wind up with that reaction when the story seems "an exercise in utter futility," though (or perhaps, as I was thinking a little while ago, I might feel "sorry" for some fictional characters without feeling "indignant" for them), and I was willing to interpret the end of the anime as offering a bit more positivity than that... although in saying that, I'm now remembering thinking the conclusion of the manga taking a bit more of a "things will have to change; we'll have to work and hope" tack than my recollection of the anime's conclusion seeming more "the ambiguous revelations at the very end are reserved for the remaining main characters, but they're hoping things might change." Of course, to get to that you have to get through all the bulgy, squashy fanservice...
