krpalmer: (anime)

People did seem to like Avatar: The Last Airbender, but when I bought its DVD sets I was also aware Dave Filoni had worked on that series before taking charge of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. More than that, hearing the series also cross-pollinated anime and "western" animation certainly didn't hurt either, even if this did continue to point out how I didn't quite seem to be watching even as many animated series done in at least some part on this side of the Pacific as I used to. It had been a while since Megas XLR, Teen Titans Go, and even The Boondocks, as varied as those experiences had been.

People also seemed to say a good deal about how Avatar: The Last Airbender "takes a while to really get going," but even after the first four episodes on the first DVD I find myself approving of the show enough to say something about it. The very beginning of the world-building is interesting enough, although I do wonder a little if, in appearing to me to draw from a variety of cultures, it might come across to others as "all mushed together." I'm also interested that there does seem a small sense of "things beginning to modernize." As well, as small as this might seem to be in perspective, it seems able to set up a sense of genuine peril and challenge for the protagonists without coming across as "this is a cartoon; nobody ever gets killed in a cartoon."

As I was getting started on that series at last, I also happened to hear that the streaming video site Crunchyroll, always seeming to be out for new content, was adding a series from the people who had made "Red vs. Blue." I'd watched some of that "machinima" series and liked what I saw (including the little inside joke where one of its characters drops back from Halo to Marathon Infinity), but did eventually get to the point where I could just figure "okay, that's enough" and stop then and there. I started "RWBY" (taken from the colour-coding of its four main characters) with its extended "trailers," almost context-free but seeming to pack that subtle sense of "this could be just what some people keep complaining is missing from anime these days." I don't necessarily believe that myself, but it still came across a welcome example of "don't complain, or even 'fan-edit'--create." The computer graphics used for that are obvious enough, but even so they do manage to appeal to me (and I've noticed as I write this some of them promoting the package used). As I get into the stuff with actual dialogue and characterization, though, I suppose I'm starting to think it might not be that distant from some of the whimsies of anime as it is.
