I noticed the original plan to set Robotech: The Movie during The Macross Saga mentioned in Peter Walker's essay, but I suppose I didn't bring that up because the post was getting long, and I didn't know if anyone who would actually see it would be interested in it... which meant, of course, that I was surprised and pleased to get your comment. (I know about the Space Station Liberty podcast, although I admit I haven't found the time to do much more than sample it.)
It's quite possible to me that setting the Movie during The Macross Saga would have preserved more of a sense of dark, dangerous wonder breaking into an ordinary world; by Robotech: Masters, I think things were getting a bit more "domesticated" that way. However, I've also long been interested in Peter Walker's suggestion that the Movie could have toned down its remaining attempts to proclaim the war was somehow "secret," and continue to have Dana Sterling and company shoot down the Robotech Master mothership. Still (while I don't have an actual source for this), I have the sense that the Movie was re-edited in a tearing hurry to conform to the demands of the Cannon Pictures executives. In any case, it may not have helped with the Movie being underpromoted and controversial, and it may have wound up anyway a victim of the attacks on Carl Macek by those much less willing to see compromises in the bringing of anime to North America...
