krpalmer: (anime)

Yesterday, I managed to spot a piece of entertainment news that reported that Tobey Maguire and Warner Brothers had plans to make a live-action movie of Robotech, and it caught my attention. News has been circulating of other animated series at least connected to anime (such as Speed Racer) being made into live-action movies, and I suppose I might have had the occasional thought that some hypothetical "window of opportunity" might either exist or be closing for Robotech...

Of course, right now the situation seems to be one where wild speculation is pretty much all that's possible. I've seen just enough to notice that some fans seem hopeful about Tobey Maguire's name being connected with the project, I can certainly imagine others just muttering "Forget it, it's Hollywood," and I can wonder what parts of Robotech's composite storyline might be worked into the project and how, given what seems general confusion about just who has what parts of the rights to the original anime Macross... and then, of course, there's the possibility that the project might never make it out of development anyway. I do know there was talk about ten years ago now of making a live-action movie of "Star Blazers," but nothing came of it... Still, the simple idea does interest me. Robotech started as a potentially peculiar reinterpretation of several anime series (I'm willing be unsure how much of that was intentional), and now that might be going to happen again...

Speed Racer? I doubt that would work for a general audience. So much of that show played to a really young audience. Star Blazers or Robotech, otoh, would have my full support as long as they don't go too over the top with casting (and the ever-so-creative Hollywood reinterpretations). Maguire seems OK as a mainstream actor - not catering overmuch to the young adult/teen crowd. :)

I hadn't really thought that about Speed Racer, but then I don't think I've ever actually seen a full episode of the show. It may have reached that ambiguous stage where the concept is more "available" and certainly more remembered than any specific examples... Of course, as you've said, pretty much anything can happen while making a movie.

Well... it has been a while since I saw any Speed episodes. And in all fairness I was quite a young audience. I just remember thinking it was pretty juvenile at the time. I had to watch it, though. It came on right before Star Blazers and tuning in a uhf channel in those days was real work! :D

That's an interesting juxtaposition for the time I'm guessing it happened in, a time in which I envision just a handful of people really knew or cared where cartoons like Speed Racer and Star Blazers originally came from... although maybe I'm projecting my own experiences on to it. It took me a while to learn that Robotech was something more than just one interesting show from the "Age of Robot Merchandising," that it came from somewhere specific, that there were other shows similar to it, and that it just might be possible for even someone like me to be able to see them... although if I'd been reading the Robotech comics, I might have realised all of that sooner by years.
