The Great 2013 Upgrade

Hearing the latest revision of the Macintosh system software (getting past the problem of "what happens when they run out of big cat names?", but not how "System 10.10" and beyond might look) would be a free download caught my attention, but I did remember it's not just a matter of having to "spend money" but also the "fear, uncertainty, and doubt" over whether some small yet seemingly vital behaviour will "break" and force me to get used to it that's made me slow to upgrade before. At the same time, though, to yield to fear and cling to the past doesn't quite appeal to me. This time around, when I at last thought I could try and upgrade I only slowed down so as to get new external hard drives to at least preserve the option of going back.
Even with more than one backup, it was still an apprehensive experience to once more try something many other people don't bother with and wipe my internal hard drive to attempt a "clean install." While I was waiting for all the files to copy back from the backup disk, I went to see the second Hobbit movie (which by the end seemed to be using the book just for a general outline to be elaborated on at length, but as with the first didn't quite seem to have any of the moments of the Lord of the Rings movies that clashed altogether with my previous impressions of the books); getting back from it, the files had already all loaded.
I saw right away that the "full screen background" texture had changed from the sometimes attention-getting "linen" to an unadorned yet lustrous dark grey, and there's an option right in the Finder to reveal the "Library" folder should you want to. Just a few days into feeling things out, though, I noticed there's just been a 10.9.1 upgrade announced. I usually only wait a week or so before installing those minor upgrades to make sure nobody else's computers are exploding.
