2008: This Journal in Review
With another full year of journalling behind me, I'm going to try something that I thought of twelve months ago again, taking the first sentence from the first post of each month just to see what I get.
January: I've been starting to think that it's just about time to make another post to my journal, but haven't been quite sure what to post about.
February: Having recently found a copy of "The Island of Dr. Moreau" in the recent Penguin Books series of annotated versions of H.G. Wells's novels, I decided to do some re-reading; Wells's works of early science fiction are among my favourite books.
March: Poking around, I noticed an article on the Star Wars official site taking a look at the manga adaptations of the "Imperial Trilogy," then kept noticing links to it on various comics and manga weblogs that I follow.
April: Last year, I made up three reviews of all the anime that I watched then, but wound up dividing things into those three chunks more or less because I couldn't quite manage to put anything together at the start of April.
May: I recently received in the mail a used copy of "The Making of Return of the Jedi" that I had ordered online.
June: It's on to the sequel to "The Amazing Colossal Man."
July: Keeping up with the schedule I set for myself three months ago, I'm taking another look back at the anime I've recently watched.
August: After presenting in its fourth season three different "Hercules" movies (each featuring a different bodybuilder in the lead role), Mystery Science Theater 3000 returned to the "muscles and mythology" genre once more near the start of its fifth season.
September: Just to claim that my interests aren't made up just of bits and pieces of the print and visual media and some science-related topics, I've decided to talk a little about my Labour Day long weekend.
October: It's time to take another look back at the anime I watched in the last three months, which started off with some large and surprising realignments in the North American releasing industry and seem to have rounded out with people complaining about how the re-releases of the titles caught up in those realignments are pitched via collections to the mere "mass market," not to however many of those who were actually buying the series one instalment at a time before.
November: The twentieth anniversary of the premiere of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on a small UHF station in Minnesota is almost upon us.
December: Yesterday evening, my department at work held a movie night with the promise of a free meal as well.
This year I did start off some months with unambigous references to Star Wars, but there were a good number of references to Mystery Science Theater 3000 as well among more "scheduled" looks back at anime watched. On the other hand again, I did manage to mention a few things beyond computer and television screens...
