2013: Journal in Review

We've made it through another year, and once again I'm closing it out by taking the first sentence from the first post of each month. Where in years before I had tried to write a post in between each episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 commented on, this year I was trying to write a post every week, just to say I had. I managed to work the numbers assigned to each new post above two hundred thousand, which feels like sort of an accomplishment. Managing that much, though, does sometimes leave me thinking I've slugged away at this long enough and I can "retire," unnoticed yet without personal reproach. I can shake that thought off other times, though.

January: Making two two-episodes-a-weekend double features out of it, I managed to get into and through before the end of the year one of the two Mystery Science Theater 3000 collections I had let sit in my push to comment on all the episodes.

February: After realising just what day yesterday was, I decided to change my routine just a little and opened a movie I'd bought off the discount rack not that long ago, all things considered.

March: Some more televisions have been set up in the elevator lobbies at work tuned to the local "news snippet" channel, and I was wondering on Friday if that channel would cover the latest Falcon 9 launch that morning.

April: Three months ago, I led off my look back at the anime I'd watched in the three months previous facing the new wrinkle of the online store I'd got into the habit of ordering all my anime from having raised its free shipping threshold, and in the three months since then I may have had to face compounding consequences.

May: I've heard it said in response to "money should be spent addressing problems on Earth before it's spent on fripperies like space travel" that the money is spent on Earth paying wages and buying things instead of being loaded into rockets and fired into the void.

June: A little while ago, I bought an official collection of PDF-formatted issues of twenty-nine years of the "Skeptical Inquirer" magazine.

July: In the middle of the past three months, I went off on a vacation, and that meant something of a break from watching anime too.

August: When I was off on vacation, I heard that a project I'd been following news of for a while, the "crowd-funding" streaming site Anime Sols, was now under way.

September: I happened to see in my own newspaper's occasional science fiction book column news of a boxed set of SF novels from the 1950s.

October: With another three months gone by, once again I'm taking a look back at the anime I watched in them.

November: After contributing to a DVD set on the "crowd-funding" site Anime Sols to join in the final rush and try to ensure its grand experiment didn't come to an end right away, I suppose my completionist urge kicked in and I contributed to the second set of the same series, still feeling sort of awkward about mentioning the title "Creamy Mami."

December: When I was recording Star Trek episodes off cable, I skipped over "The Enemy Within," the one where a transporter malfunction splits Kirk into a good captain and an evil captain.

See you in the new year!
