I read Cul de Sac when it was printed in our local newspaper (The Oregonian). I liked it, but I never got really into the strip as I did with many of my favorites. I had the same level of detachment that I currently have with Get Fuzzy and Pearls Before Swine. I guess I have little enthusiasm for syndicated comics nowadays. The only syndicated comic I follow regularly is Frazz, and I don’t have a strong attachment to it. The last syndicated comic I was hooked on is Calvin and Hobbes – and that was an eon ago. Nowadays I mostly go with web comics like Sinfest.
Coincidentally yesterday when I was in Powell’s Books I was examining the new hardback compilations of Pogo, one of my all-time favorites. If I had the money to spare, those are the books I’d collect. However, I do have most of the strips among the 15 Pogo compilation books I have in my library. I also have a framed Pogo Sunday lithograph hanging in my house. They don’t make comics like that anymore.
