From what I've heard (and as I run the Space Station Liberty podcast (http://terrania.us/liberty), I've heard a lot), Macek's original intent for Robotech: The Movie was to do more of a straight dub of Megazone 23, and tell the story of a civilian learning about the government coverup of the SDF-1's misfold. In that context, it might actually have worked better. (And would have led to General T.R. Edwards in The Sentinels instead being B.D. Andrews from that movie, and Eve downloading herself into a robot body to go along instead of an unrelated character called Janice Em.)
